Statement of Task

A planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will
organize and convene a 1-day public workshop to explore various aspects of faculty
development. Presentations will provide examples of how educators are using effective teaching
strategies and of practices in health professional education. The workshop will emphasize the role
of education in changing health systems that may include but are not limited to:

• Expanding educators’ pedagogical and andragogical skills;
• Keeping up with content knowledge;
• Developing relationships across health professions and across sectors;
• Being aware of changes in health systems and being ready to adapt
education as indicated;
• Learning, teaching, and applying new technologies and data-driven
applications;
• Understanding faculty’s role in assessing, mentoring, and providing con- structive
feedback to learners and colleagues; and
• Recognizing one’s own limitations, physically, mentally, and financially in
order to minimize the negative effects of stress and prevent burnout.
