This article discusses the successes, challenges, and possible next steps regarding the implementation of a post-graduate diploma in addictions (PGDIP) and the Universities of Cape Town and Stellenbosch. Though the program has been successful, financial constraints have led to sustainability issues. The authors urge the universities and government to prioritize and fund evidence-based training for the addiction workforce.
